Makes 9 cups

About Lilly: Lilly needs to lose weight. She’s gotten way too fat along with both of us. Lilly’s a little dog with a big dog appetite. We’re going to cut down on the snacks and make dishes designed specifically for her, rather than us. Though she loves what we eat, she needs more nutrient dense food, because she’s small. No more than five hundred calories a day is what the doctor said.

Although I’m not counting calories so much, I know what foods to cut back on. Lilly doesn’t eat animal products; she eats what we eat. So I’m trying this out for a couple weeks – her own homemade food, exclusively, to see how she does.

Maybe by focusing on Lilly’s weight loss, that focus will carry over to ourselves and we’ll get more serious about what we know we have to do.

5 c. water

2 c. rolled oats

1/2 c. textured vegetable protein (TVP)

1/4 c. vegan yeast (nutritional yeast)

3 T. ground flax seed

3 c. froz. cut green beans

2 lg. peeled grated carrots

2 t. salt

1 t. dried rubbed sage

1 t. ground fennel seed

1 t. ground coriander

1 t. smoked paprika

fresh grind black pepper to taste

1/2 t. ground allspice

2 T. brown sugar

1 T. liquid smoke

1 t. turmeric

1 t. beet powder

1 c. plain plant yogurt – I used Forager brand

2 T. extra virgin olive oil

1- In large saucepan, over medium heat, combine all ingredients, stirring after each addition. Slowly bring to boil, stirring often to prevent sticking to prevent sticking.

Reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes, then turn heat off and let set until cool enough to pack, covered, and refrigerate.

3- That’s it, super easy.

4- And yes, Lilly loved it. So, it’s 1 cup per day with 1 veggie hot dog cut up in it and whatever fresh veggie I have on hand, so she gets some raw. Tonight it was celery. She ate it all and came back to thank me. Success!

  • In the morning she’ll have 2 Tablespoons Spanish peanuts and I’ll still give her a couple bites of whatever it is that I have, since she enjoys that.
  • She loves green beans, so she’ll have all the fresh raw green beans she wants.
